Abstract: This study evaluated commercially available elastomeric chains from two companies
for force intensity and the percentage of delivered force decay. Gray closed-chain elastomers
from American Orthodontics (AO) and 3M Unitek (3MU) were submitted to single (once)
pre-stretching procedure and placed in distilled water for 48 hours. The samples were then
stretched in 50% of their original lengths and maintained in artificial saliva or in oral
environment during three weeks. Forces delivered by elastomeric chains were measured on a
stress-strain testing machine (EMIC). All tested groups presented lower average force values
after three weeks, when compared with the respective average values of the initial forces. A
great variation of the averages presented occurred considering intermediate periods evaluated for the two environments and the two tested companies. The evaluated elastomers immersed in artificial saliva presented a more uniform behavior, higher delivered force averages and lower force-degradation rates than the groups kept in oral environment. Elastomers from AO presented the best results among the tested companies. In artificial saliva AO samples presented values of 162,83 gf and -10,29% after 3 weeks, while 3MU presented values of 138,13 gf and -14,46%, respectively for the delivered force values and the rates of force decay, both presenting statistically significant differences. In the oral environment, 3MU presented the worse performance after 3 weeks, presenting delivered force values and the force-degradation rates of 108,28 gf and -35,64%, respectively. Despite AO presented the best results comparing to 3MU in the oral environment, presenting delivered force average and rates of force decay of 144,65 gf and -17,60% respectively, the differences between the two companies evaluated after 3 weeks were not statistically significant. After the period of three weeks, all sample presented a sufficient amount of force to promote dental movement

Abstract: Smoking is a risk factor for systemic and oral health. Scientific evidence supports the negative influence of tobacco smoking on periodontal tissues. Current studies suggest harmful effects on periapical tissues of endodontically compromised teeth. This retrospective cohort study aimed to investigate the impact of tobacco smoking on the endodontic treatment prognosis. Other predictive factors' impacts, such as the presence of coronal restoration, operatory accidents, sealer extrusion, apical limit, quality of root filling, and patient’s systemic condition, were also evaluated. This study consisted of all those who were submitted to endodontic treatment in the year 2016 at the Endodontics Department of the Rio de Janeiro Military Police (n=518) (ethics committee approval n.2.849.580). The inclusion criteria were ASA I and ASA II patients with a permanent tooth submitted to endodontic treatment. The exclusion criteria were patients undergoing orthodontic treatment and with severe bone loss (probing depth > 6mm). Patients were evaluated through clinical and radiographic examinations. Pre- and post-operative and follow-up periapical radiographs were assessed, and the periapical status was rated according to the Periapical Index score by two independent examiners (Kappa=0.87). The success or failure of endodontic treatment after at least five years of follow-up was based on clinical symptoms and radiographic evaluation of periapical tissues. The data were analysed in SPSS 23® using descriptive statistics and multiple logistic regression. A hundred and three patients (11 smokers and 92 non-smokers) were examined in this preliminary phase of the study. Treatment failed in two of the 11 smokers and in 22 of the 92 non-smokers (OR=1.4; 95% CI 0.2-7.4). No association of other predictive factors with endodontic treatment prognosis was observed (p<0.05). Thus, with our prelimary results, no association was found between tobacco smoking and other evaluated variables and the prognosis of endodontic treatment.

Abstract: The registration of head position provides to examiner an important information that aids in the decision to treat dento facial deformities. The purposes of this study were: 1) compare three-dimensionally the reproducibility of the natural head position (NHP) and the oriented head position (OHP); 2) describe a new method to register the head position through face scanning and 3-dimensional analysis. Three facial records were performed in NHP and 3 in OHP, with a minimum interval of 1 week among the records (T1, T2 and T3). The angles of the 3 axes (X, Y and Z) were calculated and compared to evaluate the reproducibility of each head position. Ten subjetcs were selected to participate in this study, and a total of 60 records and 180 measurements were obtained for comparison of the most reproducible position. After aplying the paired t test for a normal sample, no statistical difference was found between NHP and OHP (p<0,05). Both methods proved to be effective in face positioning.

Abstract: Molar incisor hypomineralization (MIH) is a enamel mineralization defect, of systemic origin, that affects one to four first permanent molars, frequently associated with affected incisors. Patients affected by MIH may present aesthetic compromise, when there is incisor involvement, functional compromise, involving pain and sensitivity in the hypomineralized teeth as well as more need for restorative treatment in these teeth, which could have an impact on the quality of life of these patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of MIH on oral health related quality of life in 8-10 year-old children. Sixty children with MIH, who was attending their first dental appointment at the clinic of the Pediatric Dentistry Department, were enrolled in the study. The control group consisted of sixty children matching age and gender. Two calibrated examiners assessed MIH and dental caries using EAPD and WHO criteria (DMFT index), respectively. The Child Perception Questionnaire (CPQ8-10) was used to evaluate the impact of MIH on the quality of life. CPQ8-10 consists of 29 questions divided among four domains: oral symptoms, functional limitation, emotional well-being, and social well-being. Non-parametric tests were used to test the association between CPQ and independent variables (MIH, affected incisors, molars severely affected, caries experience, treatment need, gender, and age). Poisson regression with robust variance was used for multivariate analysis to test the association between the CPQ8-10 domains and the independent variables in terms of rate ratio (RR) and 95% confidence interval (CI). Overall CPQ8-10, oral symptoms, and emotional well-being scores were significantly higher for children with MIH (p<0.05). The multivariate analysis showed that oral symptoms (RR: 1,37; 95%CI: 1,02 – 1,84) and functional limitation (RR: 1,56; 95%CI: 1,04 – 2,33) were significantly affected by the presence of severely affected molars with treatment need. Based on the data from the present study, it was concluded that MIH had a negative impact on the quality of life in 8-10 year-old children, who showed higher values of CPQ8-10, and the presence of severely affected molars with treatment need represented the main impact factor.
