Abstract: "To the madmen, the asylum!". When in the nineteenth century the members of the Imperial Academy of Medicine and the Faculty of Medicine of Rio de Janeiro used this slogan to demand the creation of hospices to house the madmen of the city, they were in line with what was most modern and revolutionary in Europe. At a time when the so-called alienated were collected in the streets and sent to public jails or the Holy Houses of Mercy and in these places suffered from moral reprimands to physical torture, a space destined only to them would solve two problems in one stroke: it would remove from the streets the disturbing element of order while at the same time restoring their reason from moral treatment. Thus, was inaugurated with pomp and circumstance the first Hospice of Brazil, which came to receive the name of Emperor Dom Pedro II and be considered a landmark of modernity. However, what history shows us is that, over time, various abuses have been committed in these institutions. It is not surprising, therefore, that Brazilian telenovelas, which have always sought to get closer to daily life and life, have so often made use of this resource as a stage for the misadventures experienced by their good guys and villains. In different stations, in different decades, we find a multitude of characters affected by madness or falsely accused of it and interned in psychiatric institutions that restrict their contact with the city and deprive them of everything that is dear to them. Considering the strength that telenovelas have in our country, especially those of the Globo broadcast, we propose an investigation and an analysis about how hospices are represented by them, from an empirical observation and having as theoretical reference Goffman's concept of total institutions, of clichés and stereotypes of Amossy and Pierrot and of representation of Stuart Hall. In line with what was established by Motter and Lopes, we consider the brazilian telenovelas as a genre of its own, which has peculiarities that distinguish it from both American soap operas and soap operas produced in other parts of the world. In addition to Motter and Lopes, our analysis of the brazilian telenovelas is also based on Hamburger's work. To achieve our goal, we chose as a methodological cut the telenovelas Caminho das Índias, O outro lado do Paraíso, Orgulho e Paixão and Além da ilusão, which contains important scenes set in psychiatric institutions.

Abstract: The new digital reality has, within its blunt effects, shifted traditional structures of power. In this dissertation, we aim to highlight the new relations between communications and idolatry, revolutionized by social media. To check said decentralization in the creation of new idols, we analyze the trajectory of the streamer, gamer and entertainer, Bruno Goes, also known as Nobru in the esports world, and his mediatic self-sufficiency, that classifies him within the digital idols class: the Self-Made Media Man. The contextualization of this analysis includes theoretical references of researchers of the field, as well as an important historical approach, that shows not only the evolution of esports, but also its relevance in the ludic, technological and marketing areas.

Abstract: This research on Communication and the development of citizenship, carried out with part of the Rio de Janeiro agroecological movement: the Rio de Janeiro Urban Agriculture Network (CAU Network). Active in the city of Rio de Janeiro since 2009, this networked social movement disputes the right to the city according to an agroecological reading of reality. The overall objective is to understand the processes of communication for citizenship carried out by the Rio de Janeiro Urban Agriculture Network. It is a participant research, cartographic in nature, in addition to using the application of conversations and semi-structured interviews. The research investigates how development proposals can be understood as inducing or dissuading citizenship processes, and understands agroecology as a development proposal for citizenship. Part of a larger cultural front, which involves other organizational spheres of the Brazilian agroecological movement, the communication and dialogue actions between groups that weave the CAU Network are studied according to a dialogical communication framework. It demonstrates the specificities of Rio's agroecology, which is carried out through the mediations imposed by the city. It describes the communication repertoires used by Rede CAU, which seek advances in the field of citizenship. It is concluded that agroecology can be understood as a communication process for citizenship, which seeks, in the realization of the right to the city, its way of exercising.

Abstract: This dissertation investigates the logic of the meritocratic system that relies on universal values such as equality, social justice, and intellectual excellence. Its action in education, and other organizational bases of society, goes back to the origins of modern Western thought and its civilizing ideals. Aware of the Eurocentric and, therefore, colonial bias of Modernity and its mechanisms, this research focuses on the entry of black men and women into universities, more specifically, into graduate programs (PPG). The potentially exclusionary meritocratic logic present in these selection processes provoked the creation of preparatory courses to remedy the historical absence of black bodies in this segment, even after the implementation of affirmative action in undergraduate programs. Thus, the main objective of the research is to understand if the courses are able to demonstrate that raciality is a constituent element of the meritocratic system that hinders the access of black, indigenous and trans students to master's and doctoral programs in the area of communication. In this sense, we propose to analyze the dynamics between subjects and the strategies that emerge in the courses as a way to enter the PPGs in the Southeast. It is assumed that the cooperation between candidates and volunteers produced in these spaces resists the action of the merit device. The methodological procedures consisted of participant observation, in-depth interview, questionnaires, quantitative survey of courses through Social Networks and document analysis. Based on the analyses, we conclude that the courses constitute teaching and affection communities capable of translating the norms of Graduate Studies, acting as mediators between the candidates and the public university, collectively producing, through a quilombola technology, resistance to the merit logic that operates in Graduate Studies.
