Abstract: Built on the exchanges between design and education, this thesis aims to investigate how the methodological approach of Design Thinking and the pedagogical potential of Project Thinking can be useful in the Continuing Training of Basic Education teachers in Rio de Janeiro. The methodology used for this study follows a qualitative perspective and is based on cartography (Kastrup, 2009) as an intervention research method that collects clues along the way; In traversing this path, we emphasized aspects of the analysis of everyday life (Certeau, 1994; Alves, 2019), conversation as a methodology (Nolasco-Silva, 2019), and ethnography (Angrosino, 2009).Marked by the COVID-19 pandemic and the return to in-person classes, this study is contextualized within the fertile academic territory of the DesEduca Lab ESDI/UERJ and the Design & School Research Center. Its theoretical framework surveys literature that studies teacher training and design proposals in this context. It develops with design theories that ground design as an innate cognitive process capable of rationalizing everyday actions and shaping thought. It then undergoes a methodological applicability test, associating Design Thinking and the use of agency dispositifs. And finally, it appropriates the principles of inventive cognition and design-based learning (Martins, 2016) to study pathways for design in basic education. This composition appropriates concepts such as: “inventive learning” (Kastrup, 2001), “learning by designing” (Martins, 2022), “design awareness” (Archer, 2005), “consciousness through design” (Martins; Silba, 2019), “dispositif” (Foucault, 2000; Deleuze, 1988; Kastrup; Barros, 2019; Agambem, 2005), “conversation dispositif” (Anastassakis; Szaniecki, 2016), “agency dispositif” (Martins; Silba, 2022), transformative agency (Sannino, 1996, 2016), “atelierista” (Davoli, 2022) “designerista” and “teacher-designer” (Martins, 2019; Augusto et al., 2022).To conclude the narrative arc, the results of the experiments and discussions about the field are presented.Through the reference of the “Design & School” workshop and the educational networks developed in this cartography, we found theoretical and practical grounding to experiment in the school with the collective construction of an agency dispositif that aimed to mediate and clarify the pedagogical intentions of the team.Integrated into the stages of “Design Thinking” (Burnette, 1993), the formative process mediated by active participation with the dispositif lasted 8 months and included 4 guided actions, 3 presentations of pedagogical complementation, and 1 conversation circle.Never intending to become a set of rules, we conclude this work by commenting on what can be replicated in future designmediated teachers training processes: (1) the inventive construction of agency dispositifs allows for the simultaneous mediation of synchronous and asynchronous actions, extend, deepen, and pollinat the path; (2) Class Councils and other regular meeting spaces, such as the teachers' room, are considered recurring opportunities for continuing education processes; (3) the use of Design Thinking is not a limiting structure, but rather an empowering factor, especially when complemented with studies on inventive cognition and Projectual Thinking.

Abstract: This research undertakes a methodological journey through the Quinta da Boa Vista Park, in the suburbs of Rio de Janeiro, viewing it as a living subject-territory, traversed by stories, disputes, and affects. The study is situated within the vibrant tension between enchantment, manifested in the suburban populations’ affectionate appropriation of this "collective backyard” and the colonial wounds, institutional disputes, and violences that mark the lived experiences and the landscape. The starting point is the body traversed by the territory, exposing the displacement of the researcher who, upon entering the contact zone, transitions from the position of an observing researcher to that of a sharer. It investigates here how leisure asserts itself as a category inseparable from the right to the city, and how the territory of Quinta acts as a trigger for what I conceptualize as devir-erê. The work is structured on the understanding that the field of design operates as an agent of articulation and the construction of experiences. Thus, Quinta emerges as a place of encounters and disputes where the city retells itself through the cracks: a place where being, staying, and imagining become, in themselves, forms of belonging.

Abstract: The growing environmental concern has driven the use of renewable materials, highlighting eco-composites with vegetable fibers as a promising alternative in industrial design. This thesis analyzes the workability and application potential of an eco-composite based on piaçava fibers (Lower South of Bahia and middle Rio Negro – Manaus) and vegetable-derived polyurethane resin (castor oil). The research is based on the Design by Material Experience method with Eco-composites, guided by material experimentation in the design process. The fibers were used in their natural state, without chemical treatments, and subjected to particle size reduction in a knife mill, aiming to favor homogenization with the polymeric matrix. The material was produced by heated compression molding, from different proportions of fiber and resin. The methodology articulates bibliographic review, laboratory experimentation and workability tests, including traditional machining, CNC machining, mechanical bonding, surface finishing and application in design prototypes. The results indicate that the eco-composite exhibits good machining performance, dimensional stability, and aesthetic potential, demonstrating viability for applications in coatings, partitions, furniture, and lighting fixtures, especially in indoor environments. Limitations include sensitivity to weathering and the absence of standardized tests, restricting its use in structural applications. As a contribution, the research proposes design guidelines and reinforces material experience as a strategy in the development of sustainable materials.

Abstract: This dissertation addresses the intersection between Design, Architecture, the Right to the City, and the phenomenon of LGBTI+ refuge, aiming to understand how reception and shelter practices are established in Brazil, particularly through spaces that operate as shelters for these dissident bodies. The research focuses specifically on the experiences of LGBTI+ refugees seeking shelter in Brazil due to persecution and prejudice related to gender identity and sexual orientation. The main objective is to analyze how networks of affection constructed within these shelters facilitate access to the Right to the City for this population, taking as a case study the Casa Dulce Seixas, located in Nova Iguaçu, Rio de Janeiro. Investigating public policies and institutional practices aimed at reception and integration, the dissertation emphasizes the critical importance of community participation as a key element in the design process of a welcoming city. This allows for identifying the specific demands of this population, enabling a more sensitive and effective approach to discussions about their Right to the City, and aiming to suggest potential strategies that promote emotionally and physically safe environments. Additionally, inclusive architecture is highlighted as a vital tool to foster the integration and safety of these refugees, while the research also addresses legal and urban issues and identifies best practices concerning the inclusion of refugee and LGBTI+ bodies in urban contexts. By adopting an integrated approach, this study seeks to inform public policies and contribute not only to the fields of architecture and design but also to broader discussions on human rights, diversity, and inclusion. Ultimately, the dissertation advocates for envisioning fairer and more inclusive cities for LGBTI+ refugees, recognizing their fundamental contribution to the social and cultural fabric of host communities.
