<title>A Ditadura Civil-Militar Brasileira nas Narrativas dos Livros Didáticos (1979-1987): Entre Encontros e Desencontros</title>

Abstract: This dissertation aims to analyze the narrative of the Brazilian civil-military dictatorship in the textbook Sinopse da História da Civilização Geral e do Brasil (1979), by Roberto Bandeira Accioli and Alfredo Taunay, seeking to determine whether its narrative presents singularities in relation to the school literature produced during the dictatorship itself. This inquiry is justified by Accioli’s historical and institutional position during the dictatorship, which we believe is manifested in his didactic work. As a methodological strategy, we also analyze the narrative of three additional History textbooks by other authors, published between 1979 and 1987, a period prior to the standardization introduced to textbooks by the Programa Nacional do Livro Didático (National Textbook Program). Considering the regime as a constraining factor for all the books, and Accioli’s trajectory and institutional insertion as a distinctive feature, we investigate clues to the meanings constructed around the 1964 coup and the authoritarian regime across the set of works. Drawing on the theoretical frameworks of Paul Ricoeur, Mikhail Bakhtin, Helenice Rocha, Ângela de Castro Gomes, and Patrícia Hansen, we examine the textbooks as historical narratives structured by discursive, ideological, and editorial choices. Within each work, we conduct an analysis encompassing tables of contents, plot structures, vocabulary, the explicit presentation of historiographical contributions, and modes of representing the dictatorship, with particular emphasis on the Sinopse. The comparison among the four manuals reveals that, although there are differences in thematic organization and in the treatment of conflicts, conciliatory representations, moderate explanations, and versions that downplay the regime’s violence prevail, pointing to patterns widely disseminated during the dictatorship period. With regard to the Sinopse, it can be emphasized that the work presents singularities in terms of its form and organization, as well as in its explicit dialogue with historiography, as a narrative produced in the heat of the moment and as a space for mediating the social memory of the dictatorship.

Abstract: In Brazil, as happened in Europe, the 20th century can be characterized by the fascination with cities, the affirmation of urban space as a synthesis space of national modernity. We can also highlight in Brazil in the first half of the 20th century the growth in the circulation of written language, with the expansion of the Brazilian publishing market and an increase in the number of books, magazines and newspapers. Added to this list are campaign pamphlets aimed at women and children and almanacs. Among the printed materials that circulated in Brazil since the 1920s, the Almanaque da Parnaíba, published in Piauí, with annual periodicity and circulation throughout Brazil, contributed not only to the dissemination of new habits and customs, but also participated in the formation of a social imaginary from Parnaíba in the first decades of the 20th century. The city of Parnaíba was presented, in this form, as “modern”, beautiful and attractive, highlighting its commercial potential and its economic importance within the State of Piauí. This thesis analyzes the Almanaque da Parnaíba in the period between the years 1924 and 1941, focusing on the dissemination of reforms carried out in the city, the dissemination and linking of notions about the role that Parnaíba women should assume in marriage and in caring for children.

Abstract: This dissertation aims to analyse the relations established between the company Itaipu Binacional and the Brazilian dictatorship in the context of the repression of workers during the construction of the Itaipu hydroelectric plant. Located in a strategic area classified as ‘national security,’ the company structured, through its Special Security and Information Advisory (AESI/Itaipu), a surveillance and control apparatus responsible for implementing repressive practices within the construction site. Among these practices, interrogations and illegal detentions stand out. In addition, AESI/Itaipu monitored workers, compiling dossiers and so-called ‘dirty lists,’ documents containing the names of employees considered ‘subversive,’ which were systematically forwarded to the regime's repressive agencies, such as the National Information Service (SNI) and the Department of Political and Social Order (Dops). The time frame for this investigation covers the period between 1975 and 1987. In 1975, civil works on the dam began, with the recruitment of the first Brazilian and Paraguayan workers, hired by the consortiums of contractors responsible for the construction of lodgings and residential villages. In 1987, one year after the founding of the Union of Workers in the Civil Construction Industries of Foz do Iguaçu, and in the midst of the redemocratization process, the first organized strikes broke out at the construction site, which were harshly repressed with the use of military force, including the presence of Army tanks.
