Abstract: The evaluation of the soil erosion potential is a fundamental importance study as a tool to aid in soil conservation and the environment, as well as assisting in the preparation of management plans for protected areas and also in territorial planning in urban and rural areas. However, conducting field studies to gauge soil erosion potential are expensive and take a long time, leading many experts in the use of empirical models. Aiming at the development of techniques for the assessment of soil erosion potential in the upper and middle course of the Macaé river basin - RJ, this paper proposes to formulate a mathematical model based on the concept of fuzzy sets and fuzzy logic using a Geographic Information System. The proposed model explores cause-effect relationships on the basis of the general knowledge about causes and the specific relation between processes and indicators of soil erosion which, in the present study, the application of fuzzy-based model was made by combining ten parameters: wetness index , aspect of slope, field capacity, hydraulic conductivity, average annual rainfall, vegetation cover, slope, surface curvature, bulk density and soil porosity, which were aggregated into four linguistic variables sets: (i) Soil Moisture Potential; (ii) Runoff Potential; (iii) Transport Capacity and (iv) Soil Erosion Potential. The final product of the model indicates regions that gather more or less factors promoting erosion and thus related to the input data used and is therefore a valuable tool for decision making in the development of plans and programs for prevention and control.

Abstract: Software Engineering aims at developing and organizing complex systems by imposing rules and procedures outlined for the solution of problems focusing software quality. The present master dissertation applies software engineering techniques in the context of E-FOTO project which offers a free GNU/GPL educational Digital Photogrammetric Workstation (DPW) for computer assisted education in cartographic engineering. In this
work, the Unified Process (UP) and Unified Model Language (UML) were applied for the production of conceptual models, encompassing a representative part of the knowledge in such scientific field. The result of such work derived three distinct conceptual models, so-called, Pure UML, Aspect UML and Design Patterns. The models were compared in order to get an answer for the question: Among these approaches, which one is the most compatible to scientific projects like E-FOTO? The comparison was supported by the function point analysis. The outcomes indicate Design Patterns as the approach to be used in scientific projects similar to E-FOTO. Thus, in future works, the Design Patterns
conceptual model will be employed for the physical model derivation and its implementation.

Abstract: The disorderly growth of cities leads to the emergence of urban settings which do not provide citizens with basic needs recognized by the Brazilian Constitution. The discovery and exploitation of oil in the Campos Basin in 1974 made the municipality of Macaé (RJ) suffered profound changes in  its spatial configuration, accompanied by accelerated growth and population density. The aim of this research is to develop application  supported  by   a  Geographic  Information  System,  enabling  dynamic thematic  mapping  with  main  focus  on  multi-temporal  accompaniment  of  urban growth, located in the coastal zone of the municipality and its vicinity by using a series of historical images, composed of seven times, for the years 1956, 1966, 1976, 1989, 1999, 2001 and 2004. Thus, it was done digital processing of aerial photography  and  Quickbird  system  images,  in  order  to  validate  the  potential  of SPRING, with operation guided through the steps of segmentation and supervised classification, obtaining results for the growth of the urban area council, within a period of 48 years approximately. SPRING is presented as an important tool in this process, with potential use in studies relevant to the management of cities. So, it was observed  the possibility of effective implementation in stages of preparation of the master plan items and activities related to  executive projects, both in its planning, and in its implementation.

Abstract: This work proposes the application of Geomatics in support to actions of fast 
response  to  environmental  emergencies  derived  from  incidents  in  transportation  of 
dangerous goods on Brazilian  roadways. The national cargo  transportation network 
utilizes, mainly,  the  road modal, which  responds  for  aproximately  60%  of  the  total 
volume transported. Following this modal utilization, the majority of dangerous goods 
flows  through  the  roads  as  well.  Despite  the  use  of  all  safety  procedures  in  the 
packing  and  handling  stages  of    dangerous  goods  transport  operations,  there  is 
always the possibility of incidents, specially in trips from origins to final destinations. 
This possibility or, in other words, this potential threat, obviously gives rise to risks to 
the  integrity  of  assets  and  health  of  communities  located  alongside  the  roads.  In 
addition to that, environmental risks also arise in the form of contamination of the soil, 
the  air  and  the  surface  and  underground  water.  This  work,  by  integrating 
technological resources, such as Remote Sensing, Global Positioning System (GPS), 
and  Geoprocessing,  suggests  the  implantation  of  a  georreferenced  information 
system, which  provides  the  elements  needed  for  actions of  fast  response  to  these 
events.  The  proposed  system,  termed  the  Territorial  Information  Bureau,  has  a 
structure  built  to  solve  problems  related  with  the  positioning  of  sites  on  the  earth 
surface. It integrates the Geomatics concepts through the application of its four basic 
stages:  data  collection,  data  analysis,  information  distribution  and  information  use. 
Thus,  complying  with  the  mobility  principle,  the  system  still  aims  at  displaying  on 
laptop screen the necessary information for the planning and the execution of actions 
of  response  to  these  events,  at  the  shortest  time  possible.  On  the  other  hand, 
considering that the Bureau provides, through an Internet connection, the necessary 
information  to  those  organizations  involved  in  the  actions  of  response  to  road 
incidents, it is expected a maximization of benefits of the planning of the preventive 
and corrective actions of  response, as well as a minimization of  the effects of such 
events on the population, assets and the environment.
