Resumo:	Este estudo tem como objetivo discorrer a respeito da relevância do teatro político e engajado na sociedade estadunidense através da análise da peça Building the Wall, de Robert Schenkkan, com vistas a mostrar que as leis anti-imigratórias norte-americanas criadas ao longo da história estão diretamente ligadas à ideia de hegemonia racial. A peça, escrita e lançada pelo autor antes da primeira eleição do presidente Donald Trump, em 2016, foi produzida num curto período de tempo, possivelmente na tentativa de alertar a sociedade estadunidense sobre os perigos da naturalização do discurso de ódio apresentado pelo- até aquele momento- presidenciável Trump. Por meio do questionamento de conceitos como identidade e cidadania norte-americana, a dissertação buscará traçar a trajetória da figura do imigrante para tentar entender como um país colonizado por imigrantes em sua origem eleva a figura desses à ideia de inimigo a ser combatido através das políticas de seu próprio governo. Também, o estudo discorrerá sobre a tendência atual da espetacularização de figuras políticas descrevendo como Donald Trump utiliza de artimanhas teatrais para arrebatar multidões de apoiadores apesar de sua conduta questionável no âmbito político. Ademais, a importância do teatro didático e político para a nação estadunidense ao longo de sua existência será debatida e reafirmada, juntamente com a intenção de pensar a importância de Robert Schenkkan para a transformação do pensamento xenófobo e nacionalista americano bem como seu combate à política antidemocrática e autoritária de Trump. Para tanto, o corpus ficcional da análise compõe-se das obras de Robert Schenkkan, tendo como texto principal a peça Building the Wall. Através da leitura de obras bibliográficas que abordam os tópicos supracitados iremos discutir pontos imprescindíveis a este trabalho: identidade e cidadania, hegemonia racial, totalitarismo, imigração norte-americana, a política do medo de Donald Trump, assim como o muro como proposta política
Abstract:	This study aims to discuss the relevance of political and engaged theater in American society through the analysis of the play Building the Wall, by Robert Schenkkan, to show that the North American anti-immigration laws created throughout history are directly linked to the idea of racial hegemony. The piece, written and released by the author before the first election of President Donald Trump, in 2016, was produced in a short period of time, possibly in an attempt to warn American society about the dangers of naturalizing the hate speech presented by - until that time presidential Trump. By questioning concepts such as identity and American citizenship, the dissertation will seek to trace the trajectory of the figure of the immigrant in order to try to understand how a country colonized by immigrants in its origin elevates their figure to the idea of an enemy to be fought through policies of its own government. In addition, the study will discuss the current trend of spectacularization of political figures, describing how Donald Trump uses theatrical tricks to capture crowds of supporters despite his questionable conduct in the political sphere. In addition, the importance of didactic and political theater for the American nation throughout its existence will be debated and reaffirmed, along with the intention of thinking about the importance of Robert Schenkkan for the transformation of xenophobic and nationalist American thought as well as his fight against Trump’s anti-democratic and authoritarian politics. For that, the fictional corpus of the analysis is composed of the works of Robert Schenkkan, having as main text the play Building the Wall. Through the reading of bibliographical works that address the aforementioned topics, we will discuss essential points for this work: identity and citizenship, racial hegemony, totalitarianism, North American immigration, Donald Trump's politics of fear, as well as the wall as a political proposal
