Uma territorialização na cidade: memória e patrimônio marista no Rio de Janeiro

Abstract

This thesis has as its central objective to present the trajectory of the educational Catholic congregation of the Marist Brothers of schools in Rio de Janeiro. By constituting real estate assets and carrying out an educational practice of memory, the Marists have formed a Catholic school territorialization in the city. To prove this hypothesis, it was counted with the aid of the concepts of heritage, memory and territory mobilized as guiding threads of the historiographic operation of Paul Ricoeur and the indexing paradigm of Carlo Ginzburg under which the research was guided. The thesis is organized in four chapters, with the intention of going through the memories built in the colleges, the patrimonies constituted by the brothers and the territory conformed in the city of Rio de Janeiro. The first chapter focused on the analysis of memories of former students and former employees of the Marist schools in the neighborhood of Tijuca accessed from interviews based on Pierre Bourdieu, Jean Claude Kaufmann and Gilberto Velho. The data collected were analyzed to present the meanings attributed to the colleges by the interviewees. We also observed the appropriation of the schools by the students to the point of considering it as heritage, as well as the role of the Marist school culture in the production of memory about and the college. In the second chapter, the analysis focused on the path taken by the Marist heritage from France, the place of foundation of the congregation, to Rio de Janeiro based on data found in the documents of the Marists and in the journals. The third chapter was directed to the presentation of the heritage trajectory of the marists in Rio de Janeiro, where a historiography of the neighborhood of Tijuca and a mapping of the schools of the neighborhood before the marists were carried out, and examined the purchase process, construction and foundation of the two properties of the brothers in this neighborhood. For this analysis, data were collected from the annals of the Province of the Marist Brothers, from the periodicals and other documents of the congregation. In the fourth chapter, a Marist school territorialization was defended by the Marists since the foundation of their schools in Tijuca and consolidated by the recognition of their colleges as cultural heritage of the state and city of Rio de Janeiro. To arrive at this conclusion, the two processes of tombamento (municipal and state) lived by the Marist colleges in the 1990s were analyzed.
