Quando a História não diz o que sabe: romance Stella (1859) como memorialização da revolução haitiana

Abstract

This dissertation examines the construction of the memory of the Haitian Revolution through the novel Stella, written by the Haitian author Émeric Bergeaud and published posthumously in Paris in 1859. Drawing on the concept of memorialization, it analyzes the representations found within the novel and their connections to the various aspects of the revolutionary movement that established the first abolitionist state in the Atlantic world. The study also explores the historical, political, and intellectual context in which the author lived and the interactions between that context and the text of the novel. The central thesis is that Stella memorializes the Haitian Revolution by transforming it into a site of memory within the revolutionary Atlantic, framing its narrative of the revolution as both a origin myth and a political prophecy for the Haitian state and nation within the Atlantic public sphere of its time, by proposing a redefinition of concepts such as nation, revolution, and freedom.
