No ritmo da rua: ativismo juvenil e rock underground na Baixada Fluminense

Abstract

This work is a study of the initiatives and demands of young women in Baixada Fluminense who use music to promote sociopolitical actions and symbolic negotiations concerning gender issues. This is a discussion on cultural activism and musical experiences of the collective Roque Pense!, an anti-sexist youth organization that acts against gender discrimination in music, in pursuance of a change in mentality about the potential of women. In order to understand the ways in which the activism of the collective manifests itself, we investigate the dispute over the attribution of meaning to the figure of women in society and the negotiation of access and entitlement to forms of communication and expression, so as to reframe the experiences of young female rock fans. In theoretical and methodological terms, we make use of the idea that culture is a symbolic communication, a producer of meanings, because of which the subjects create symbols to build shared meanings. We call upon, thus, the concept of imaginary to understand the values through which the meanings of gender, youth and rock music are produced in this social group, through a discussion that envolves the concept of imaginary and its relation with the one of representation. We intend to contemplate the city as beyond the center-periphery relations, apprehending it from the perspective of urban imaginary, according to which a multiplicity of meanings created daily reframe power relations, urban spaces and cultural production
